THE GILDED AGE,  NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND

SEPTEMBER 20 - 26, 2026

Get ready for experiencing the Gilded Ages and opulence of Newport, Rhode Island. You will enjoy the charm of the historic buildings, homes, and mansions located throughout this tour. Including some built by Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt and one commissioned for Nevada silver heiress, Theresa Fair Oelrichs. We will board the Coastal Queen for a harbor cruise on beautiful Newport Harbor, with views of the Bay, l, and visit the famous and unique Green Animal Topiary Garden. 

Day 1:  We will travel to Wilkes Barre, PA and check in at the Hampton Inn & Suites for the night with dinner on your own.   

Day 2:  Breakfast (included) before we depart for Newport, RI, and check in at the Wyndham Newport Hotel for the night with dinner included this evening.   

Day 3:  Breakfast (included) starts our day as we board and depart to join our local guide for a narrated tour covering 150 points of interest in Newport, including the rugged beauty of Ten-Mile Ocean Drive and the fabulous mansions along tree-lined Bellevue Avenue. Stops include a self guided tour of Marble House, a summer house of the Vanderbilt’s and historic downtown Newport for some shopping time and lunch on your own. We will board the Coastal Queen Harbor Cruise for spectacular views of mansions, lighthouses and much more.  Dinner is on your own this evening.      

DAY 4:  Breakfast (included) at the hotel before we enjoy a self-guided tour of the Breakers Mansion, the grandest of Newport’s summer “cottages” and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America. Lunch (included) at the Newport Playhouse followed by an entertaining performance and a Cabaret, vaudeville style performance after the show. Dinner is (on your own) with leisure time to enjoy some of the beautiful areas surrounding the hotel.

DAY 5: Breakfast (included) before we meet our local guide who will take us on a half mile/one hour leisurely walk on the Cliff Walk for stunning views of the coastline, with  magnificent bluffs and panoramic ocean views. After our walk we will enjoy a self-guided tour of Rosecliff Mansion. Commissioned by Nevada silver heiress, Theresa Fair Oelrichs in 1899, where Mrs. Oelrichs hosted fabulous entertainment, including a party featuring magician Harry Houdini. Scenes from several movies have been shot on location at Rosecliff, including The Great Gatsby, True Lies, Amistad, and 27 Dresses. Lunch today is (on your own) downtown, before we visit the Green Animal Topiary, a 7-acre estate overlooking Narragansett Bay, and the oldest and most northerly topiary garden in the United States.  This afternoon we will tour Blithewold,  a 33-acre summer estate overlooking Narragansett Bay that is nationally significant in American History. The property features a 45-room mansion filled with family heirlooms and is framed by lovely gardens. Dinner (included) tonight at the hotel.

DAY 6:  Breakfast (included) before we board and depart with rest and meal stops (on your own) as we travel to Wilkes Barre, PA for the night. 

DAY 7:  Breakfast (included) as we board and depart for home with rest and meal stops, on your own, enroute.
